Ok so there's this really big Neutrino detector in the middle of a mountain in Japan called Super Kamioka. It's a giant, hollowed-out cylinder that's lined with very sensitive photo detectors and filled with ultra-pure water. It seems that the only known way to detect neutrinos is to see 1 in every billion of them knock off an electron of a pure H2O molecule. They have to go out on inflatable rafts and scuba gear to clean it. Here are some pics. It's so cool; I want one (and so does Mike). I am such a nerd. |
